RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT |
| With the support
of 25 highly qualified technicians in our research and development
department, we are committed to continual improvement in the quality and
technology of our pianos. A practical outcome of this commitment is our
unique soundboard design - one of the most important components directly
relating to sound quality. |
| The Alex.
Steinbach soundboard |
The original
manufacturing process 'edge glued' panels of spruce, creating a 'solid
soundboard'. This produced very good sound but ran the risk of splitting
due to down-pressure from the bridge and strings, particularly in dry or
cold climates where the soundboard dries out.
More recently, soundboards have been made using a lamination process,
which enables a 75-year warranty to be provided on many pianos.
While tests clearly demonstrated that both processes produced an almost
identical sound, traditional piano tuners maintained a preference for the
solid soundboard. In addressing this challenge we developed a solid spruce
soundboard with the innovative addition of a very thin spruce veneer
(0.5mm) to each side, giving the necessary strength and durability to
support the 75-year warranty but retaining the features of a solid
soundboard. |

THE BEST MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY |
| Skilled artisans
handcraft each Alex. Steinbach piano to meet
the unsurpassed technical design of Klaus Fenner - using only the best
materials and technology from around the world. Superb musical tone is
produced from a harmonious and perfectly balanced relationship between
strings, bridges and soundboard. Full resonance is produced and enhanced
with a precision frame of great strength and integrity with sturdy wooden
back post assembly. Musical expression is perfectly translated through
concert length piano keys, which are uniformly balanced across the
keyboard. |
From Germany
The technical design of Klaus Fenner ensures your
Alex. Steinbach piano will become an heirloom to be proudly passed
down through family generations. Klaus developed and perfected the world
famous Imperial German Scale, which ensures the superb tonal quality of
the pianos. German Roslau strings are used to give a clear and pure sound,
without the extraneous harmonics that inferior strings can produce. |
From Japan
Our hammer felt is sourced from the AMBIC
Corporation in Japan, a company which has been established for more than
80 years and is a world leader in pressed felt made from wool. The unique
characteristic of this felt is the structured homogeneous dispersion of
the fibres, giving the hammers a longer life and consistent response. |
From the USA
Specially grown rock maple is used for all the
wood action parts - this timber ensures long life for the critical action
components. Tuning stability also comes from pinblock made of multi-ply
American rock maple, considered to be the best material in the world for
the task. |
From Indonesia
Quality wood materials and veneers from
Indonesia can be found in various areas of the long lasting cabinet and
finish. |
From Korea
Korean craftsmen create the metal
superstructure from a vacuum cast iron plate to produce a smoother,
stronger, more precise frame than the old sand casting method. |

QUALITY
AND CRAFTSMANSHIP |
Super
Accelerated Action
Actions combine maximum sensitivity and
musical subtlety with lifelong strength. Accurate sound and uniform tone
is guaranteed through the entire range. Alex.
Steinbach upright pianos feature an improved Schwander style
'direct blow' action. Grand pianos have an even greater improved Renner
style concert action. |
Tuning Pins
Pins made from heat-tempered blue steel are nickel plated to prevent rust
and corrosion, with reverse-torque cut pin threads. The combination of the
pins with the perma-sealed high quality 21-ply pinblock gives greater
tuning stability and ensures the tone is virtually unaffected by
atmospheric changes. |
Hammers &
Felts
The high density AMBIC felts resist both moths
and moisture and our craftsmen T-pin all hammers to prevent separation. |
Rich Strings
The Roslau high-grade carbon steel strings are
longer than those used in most pianos, to further enrich the tone. Bass
strings are precision wrapped in solid copper to a tolerance of
one-thousandth of a millimetre. |
Concert Keys
All models feature full concert length piano
keys of white straight-grained spruce. Each is coated and lead weighted to
ensure balance across the keyboard, allowing uniform finger pressure,
regardless of the key pressed. |
Cross Bars
Acousta cross bars are located diagonal to the
ribs to eliminate undesirable overtones. This creates a brighter tone that
can be sustained for longer. |
Full Resonant
Bass Response
All upright and grand piano bridges are
crafted from quarter-sawn, hard rock maple - hand notched, custom shaped
and cut to conform to the crown of each individual soundboard. Cantilever
extended bass bridges are used to permit longer bass strings, which
enhance the full resonant bass response. |
Full Iron
Frame
The technology developed by
Alex. Steinbach has created a vacuum casting
process that results in a precision frame of great strength and integrity.
Each iron frame plate is tempered, seasoned for six months, then stress
tested before installation. |
Metal Trapwork
Trapwork connecting the pedals to the action
is made of metal to ensure precision and to prevent adverse climatic
effects. |
Superb Cabinet
There is a wonderful choice in cabinets -
genuine wood grain veneers plus ebony and ivory - coated with a specially
formulated resin that simply wipes clean. |
